Window tinting Vancouver WA
Washington State Automotive Tint Laws
What is the legal limit on tinting film in Washington?

Tinting laws came into place in Washington State in 2011.  Legal window film measures tint by the Visible Light Transmission percentage.  The percentage of light allowed through tinting film is specific and has different legal limits for sedans vs. SUVs, trucks & vans.
WA State Tinting Darkness Laws:
- Sedans
  • Windshield: Non-reflective tinting film allowed on top 6 inches of vehicle's windshield.
  • Front Side Windows: Must allow 24% or more of light in.
  • Back Side Windows: Must allow 24% or more of light in.
  • Rear Windows: Must allow 24% or more of light in.
- SUVs, Trucks & Vans
  • Windshield: Non-reflective tinting film allowed on top 6 inches of vehicle's windshield.
  • Front Side Windows: Must allow 24% or more of light in.
  • Back Side Windows: Any tinting film can be used.
  • Rear Windows: Any tinting film can be used.

As window tint film reflects light, there are also laws limiting percentage of reflection within a vehicle's window film.

WA State Tint Reflection Laws:
- Sedans
  • Front Side Windows: Can't be more than 35% reflective.
  • Back Side Windows: Can't be more than 35% reflective.
- SUVs, Trucks & Vans
  • Front Side Windows: Can't be more than 35% reflective.
  • Back Side Windows: Can't be more than 35% reflective.

Other Washington State Laws around Window Tinting:
  • Side Mirrors: If back window is tinted, dual side mirrors are required.
  • Color Restrictions: Yellow, amber and red tinting films are not allowed.
  • Certifications: Window film manufacturers must certify the film that is sold in Washington State. Ensure your film is sourced from certified dealers.
  • Stickers: A sticker denoting the legal tinting must be placed between the film and glass on the driver-side window.
  • Medical Exemptions: Medical exemptions for special levels of tint are allowed- proper certification must be within the vehicle.
